How it all began CEO Sara Banks

How it all began

After crossing the globe and observing that luggage was rarely both beautiful and well-built, in 2008 SteamLine Luggage was founded by Sara Banks to restore a sense of elegance to modern travel. With suitcases as stylish as the most beautiful accessory and worthy of each traveler’s personal style, a new way of seeing travel was born. What began as just four elegant, vintage-inspired designs is today a body of exquisitely crafted collections that inspire travelers of every nature.

Our approach The first collection

Our approach

SteamLine creates the world’s most photogenic high-performance luggage to enhance the joy of travel each step of their way. The result has been the phenomenon of “SteamLine Moments,” the frenzy of compliments and conversations that are sparked by our cases. Our signature look brightens long lines and jet lags with the reminder that travel is a celebration of life—and itself worth celebrating.

Unparalleled craftmanship & quality materials.

We’d like to think we’ve considered everything when it comes to giving you the beauty of SteamLine with the utmost modern performance. Because your travels are priceless and deserve the best. We are always here to take suggestions on any features that would mean the world to you.

Handcrafted

Working with the same team of artisans for over 15 years, each piece of luggage is made by hand. Fiberboard bases are molded and shaped to create the form before leather straps and corners are hand-stitched and riveted into place. Our printed linings and covers are hand-illustrated by artists, making each case an artistic collaboration inside and out. We have recently partnered with craftspeople in Pisa, Italy who handcraft our new canvas and leather Navigator accessory range.

Top Grain Leather

We use top-grain quality leather exclusively for our corners, handles, and straps, it is a solid leather that is workable and light-weight for travel. This particular leather features a stunning finish that gives the case a smooth feel and look, while also preventing stains from settling.

Vegan Leather

Vegan leather is a cruelty-free leather alternative. It is made from a polyurethane to imitate leather. As well as being animal friendly, the price point of vegan leather is also attractive. Lightweight and durable, this leather alternative is a beautiful animal friendly option for leather luggage.

Original Print Designs

A distinctive feature of SteamLine is our artist-illustrated fabrics featrured on our linings, covers and accessories. We take pride in our collaborations with artists from around the world, transforming hand-rendered illustrations into works of art. Our mission is to make every step of your journey exciting and beautiful, starting from the moment you pack for the adventure ahead.

Recycled bottles (Accessories)

Our protective covers, packing cubes and cosmetic cases are made from 3-10 plastic water bottles each. We are using this material in efforts to keep plastic out of the landfill and repurposed as functional items giving them a longer, circular life.

Solid Alloy Hardware

Our locks, studs and other metal hardware are made of a nickel-plated alloy. It's corrosion-resistant and very strong. It can also be made in many colors such as silver, gold, brushed antique gold all made to compliment the vintage style of our luggage whilst being durable for modern travel.

Chrome-free Sustainable Italian Leather

We have chosen chrome-free leather for our new Navigator range which means that chrome is not used in the tanning process. This means less pollution, cleaner waste streams and improved biodegradability. Although it is significantly more expensive than other types of leather, the quality and craftsmanship is impeccable.

Natural Linen & Rattan

Linen is renowned for its natural beauty and durability. Made from fibers of the flax plant, linen is one of the oldest textiles in the world, making it the perfect material for SteamLine’s old-world glamour.

Our Rattan is a sustainable, Balinese-sourced, plant material. Often woven into a wicker weave, rattan is at once lightweight and incredibly durable.

Japanese Pasco Fiberboard

Pasco fiberboard, a versatile Japanese fiberboard, is made with wood pulp and recycled paper. We use this Pasco fiberboard as it is a water-resistant, durable, pliable and environmentally-friendly material. It is uniquely able to take vibrant color, creating a modern look that combines the old world with the new.

Recycled Bonded Leather

We choose bonded leather to cover the larger surface area of our cases because it is lightweight and durable, making it ideal for modern travel. This particular style of leather is a low-waste option, often called “recycled leather,” as it is created by bonding smaller pieces of leather together before stretching them over a fiber sheet.

Sustainability efforts

In recent years we’ve concentrated our efforts on making ongoing incremental improvements toward increased sustainability. We are dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint through each of our products and practices.
